There’s a reason why everyone went ‘Gaga’ over Mahira Khan back in 2016. Doesn’t she look absolutely sexy, hot and fresh?
Mahira Khan took a break from gowns and dived into the world of eastern wear this year. Additionally, she chose none other than Rizwan Beyg to dress her up in his iconic black and nude saree, super embellished with black gems and studs.
Moreover, the slick back hair and matte smokey eyes extremely complimented the entire look. What do you think?
Menahel and Mehreen Saree
Menahel and Mehreen is a bespoke couture brand that crafts unique ensembles. Mahira Khan carried the red and black tie-dye saree by the brand flawlessly at the Hum Leaders Award show. The saree was regal, gorgeous and pleasing to the eye.
Moreover, she chose to pair it with Sherezad Jewelry and she nailed the look by keeping her hair nicely blown-out.
Here’s Mahira Khan rocking her elegant gowns
Georges Hobeika
It appears as if this gorgeous outfit comes straight out of a Disney Fairytale. Interestingly, Mahira Khan carried this Cinderella-style outfit crafted by Georges Hobeika.
The powder blue, figure-hugging top paired with flared and embroidered, tie-dye tulle skirt stole the show. She chose to keep her hair and makeup minimal to make sure all eyes rested on the dress.
Nicolas Jebran
Mahria looks mesmerizing here right? Interestingly, Mahira effortlessly won two iconic awards at the Beirut International Awards Festival 2017 while looking gorgeous.
The Nicolas Jebran Desinger gown was flared, perfectly fitted and designed incredibly. The powder-pink and black styling on the gown stole the show because she chose only one accessory to accentuate the entire look.
Moreover, her perfectly blown-out, side-parted hair complimented the Barbie-like makeup. See, this is how you rock every award show!
Shahira Lasheen
Regal, elegant and beautiful are the words that clearly describe this gown. This baby-pink Shaira Lasheen gown made her look out of this world. I simply love the intricate gem work on silk because it is extraordinary.
Indeed, the minimalist makeup with side-swept, curled hair really showed off her gown in an ideal manner.
Rami Al Ali
This bright red, silk gown was simple yet elegant. Designer unknown, Mahira Khan again stunned us all with her dewy smokey eyes and ponytail-tied hair. She chose to adorn a beautiful diamond necklace and the whole look set in awesomely.
Labour Joisie
Mahira Khan graced the carpet with a stunning Labour Joisie blue gown paired with Damas jewels. Indeed, the complicated pearl and gem work on the bodice and shoulders dropped our jaws.
Again, Mahira went low on the other parts of the look and chose a silvery smokey eye with deep-pink, yet subtle lips. She straightened her hair and let them fall simply in a side-swept manner.
Maison Yeya
Mahira Khan dropped her fans jaws right down on the floor with the glamorous Maison Yeya ensemble. This was a bold choice for her because she often chooses pastels. Nonetheless, wearing a daring gold outfit brought fire to the red carpet event and she totally nailed it.
Needless to say, Mahira Khan representing Pakistan at the Cannes Festival is marvelous. Mahira looked nothing short of a dream in the super breezy lilac strapless dress by Maison Yeya yet again.
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and hence, Mahira opted for Kiran Fine Jewelry crafted earrings. Moreover, the simple fresh makeup was truly inspiring.
Alberta Ferretti
The chic, long, figure-hugging magenta sequence outfit stole the show. The cocktail dress was diagonal off the shoulder while a huge black flower set nicely on the other shoulder.
Considering how eye-catching and sparkling the dress was, Mahira chose to keep her makeup and hair pretty simple.
Alberta Ferretti
The elegant, black Alberta Ferretti gown is ideally juxtaposed against Mahira’s physique. Moreover, her fresh complexion did justice to the pure black, dashing outfit. Choosing to paint her lips red was a great choice because it contrasted the outfit perfectly.
2020 was the year of ‘Fashion hibernation’ globally. Just like clothing, footwear trends also altered drastically. Above all, it simply felt ridiculous to step into heels and fashionable footwear to run to the grocery stores. Wearing flats, sneakers and pumps was the ideal choice.
However, with covid-19 restrictions lessening, there is more freedom to choose cooler footwear to enhance the outfits. Whether you are going to the office, to meet a friend, or going out to party; relax and put your best foot forward with these awesome footwear trends.

Iconic Bright Colored Heels: Hot, Sexy and Formal
Flaming colored heels are sassy, hip, and totally rock every look. Be it western or eastern, Pakistani women are now adorning this out-of-the-box trend to finish the look with an attitude.
Sun-kissed yellows, royal blues, shocking pinks, and stunning greens are gaining popularity. Moreover, Pakistani designers are adding crystal-like embellishments on the shoes to give them the extra oomph they deserve.
Speaking of embellishments and studs, Pakistani women simply can’t keep their hands off of snazzy wardrobe items. Why wear simple-looking shoes when you can have all the fun looking attractive?
Most Pakistani women prefer sporting flat slippers because comfort, breeziness, swiftness, and agility are the keys to get daily chores done. You will see teachers, doctors, salespersons, housemaids, stay-at-home moms and everyone in between adorning slippers.
Hence, Pakistani slippers have taken a new turn and adding colorful embellishments have allowed wearers to match them with every outfit.

The Pakistani media industry has evolved into crafting drama series that don’t stick to the conventional ‘Saas Bahu’ feuds. Today, we witness amazing drama scripts, screenplays and directions that force us to think, understand and question common social issues.
Top-tier drama channels including Hum-Tv, ARY, and GEO expand our knowledge and aid in changing the global perspective towards societal challenges.
Hence, connect on a deeper level than just entertainment and watch these stories that not only spread awareness but also provide a solution.
Udaari
Possibly the most talked-about drama series, ‘Udaari’ highlights social taboos including rape and class prejudice like none other. Interestingly, Udaari ripped through these increasingly spreading taboos in Pakistan and portrayed the struggles in our society.
Featuring Ahsan Khan, Farhan Saeed, Urwa Hocane, Bushra Ansari and Samiya Mumtaz, this drama became the talk of the town for all the right reasons.
Udaari showcases the hardships of a single mother from an unprivileged background to avail justice against her daughter’s rapist. On the other hand, Ahsan Khan played ‘Imtiaz’, the child rapist who was none other than the girl’s stepfather. While this taboo was the underlying story of the series, other social issues including how girls from mere villages are accepted in the society, especially the popular cities was also brought to attention.
Nonetheless, the best part about this drama series is how it showcases the rape victim and how the survivor can move forward and live a normal life.
Dunk
Harassment, assault, rape, and murder are extremely common crimes in Pakistan. Dunk highlights the other side of the story behind these crimes. Dunk features Noman Aijaz, Bilal Abbas Khan, and Sana Javed.
The story revolves around false allegations of harassment made by a student for her professor. Apparently, this drama series is based on a true story from MAO Coolege, Sargodha. Once the false allegations were made, everyone was thought to believe the professor was a pervert for committing such a heinous crime.
However, the professor is completely innocent and nowhere to look to, commits suicide because of societal pressure.
The drama series is directed beautifully and the script is intense. If you haven’t watched it yet, you should definitely do.
Phaans
An entangled and engaging series, Phaans also highlights rape and a call for justice. Apparently, Zeba works for an affluent family and sadly gets raped one night after work. She accuses her boss’s mentally challenged son with down- syndrome of the horrendous crime. Nevertheless, everyone denies her words and sends her home.
What’s intriguing is the fact that 3 other men are also near the crime premises and are surely hiding something. Hence, the story is captivating and engages the audience entirely. While you as a viewer have an eye on one man, the other one brings up something new. The drama is simply more than what meets the eyes.
More importantly, Zeba is not a stereotypical rape victim. She fights for her rights, stays grounded and knows what she is aiming for. Another important factor portrayed by the series is how society always sides with mentally challenged people and never envisions them as culprits.
Zara Noor Abbas, Shahzad Sheikh and Sami Khan did a brilliant job in the series.
Parizaad
Parizaad is another unconventional drama series getting all the hype for all the right reasons. this series highlights the story of an unprivileged boy who is unfortunately born with a dark skin tone. Not only does society look down upon him for his appearance but also mock him at the first chance they get.
Sadly, Parizaad is never taken seriously and is always thrown away as an outcast. However, apparently, he is intelligent, sharp, sweet, and friendly. His romantic overtures are always met with rejections and he must rise above his appearance to conquer the world.
Ahmed Ali Akbar portrays the character wonderfully while his support cast Ushnah Shah, Yumna Zaidi, and others also do justice to their roles.
Alif
Umera Ahmed’s Alif received an overwhelming applaud globally for a wonderful spun story about spirituality and love. Firstly, the story touched upon the Urdu letter ‘Alif’ as a metaphor for the perfect connection with God. Moreover, how the entire journey from a mere question to its appropriate answer was a straight line as God’s man chooses to stay on the right path and connected with his conscience.
Apparently, the story depicts the relationship between the protagonist (Qalb e Momin) and the struggling actress, Momina cross paths, discover their similar troubled and tragic pasts. Additionally, how both of them unite and work their way towards righteousness instead of choosing the wrong path.
Both Hamza Ali Abbasi and Sajal Aly did a flawless job in portraying the roles.
Damsa highlights child kidnapping, the mafia ring of beggars, and how they work in Pakistan. Moreover, how the mafias cripple children in order to mentally and physically challenge them to push them into the realm of beggary.
All the actors did justice to the series. Hats off to Nadia Jamil for her acting skills. She showcases the perfect role of a mother who loses her child in broad daylight. Moreover, Emaan Sheikh (Damsa), did a flawless job too.
This series shows how a mother’s world is torn apart when she loses her child. How she can cross all limits to find her while the father may dwell in worldly affairs after a while. The way the drama unfolds is heart-wrenching.
I highly recommend this series.
Baaghi
An inspirational drama based on the social issue ‘honor killing’ in Pakistan. Baaghi highlights the story of Qandeel Baloch and how her brother murdered her in the name of honor killing. Saba Qamar portrays the character wonderfully. Moreover, the message is super powerful. This is a must-watch series.
Cheekh
Cheekh is an incredible drama highlighting common crimes such as rape, murder and how influential, privileged and affluent families can get away with them all. Moreover, this series showcases a dedicated friend who seeks revenge at the cost of her own life and family’s support. Saba Qamar was flawless in this series.

Hum Kahan ke Sachey They
With Mahira Khan’s comeback on the screen after ages, Hum Kahan ke Sachey They is already a blockbuster hit with only 2 episodes aired. Surprisingly, this new drama series is different from the typical saas-bahu nonsense. It features Mahira Khan, Usman Mukhtar and Kubra Khan. Let’s also applaud Kubra Khan for returning to the screen after ages too.
This drama showcases societal hurdles, complexities of relationships between cousins, a mother and a daughter, a dead father and a rude grandmother. Moreover, it is also a depiction of how problems can escalate when misunderstandings take place due to communication gaps.
This series is interesting, grasps attention instantly, and is definitely recommended.
Yun to Hai Pyar Bohat
Yun To Hai Pyar Bohat brings together the most appreciated on-screen couple, Hira Maani and Affan Waheed back. This romantic series is light, easy on the eyes and the storyline is different too.
The plot revolves around a rock star in the making who struggles because he is low on resources and contacts. Apparently singing is his passion but can it help fill his pockets? On the other hand, his lover and cousin, Hira Maani has completed her law degree and joins a new firm as a fresh lawyer in the market.
Moreover, she has to work to support her family but denies Zain’s proposal because she wants him to be more responsible and look for a job instead of investing all his time in his passion.
Soniya, a rich and arrogant girl enters the story with a twist. She falls head over heels for Zain, wants to marry him while her parents disregard the idea. The drama is full of ups and downs, highs and lows and you will have to watch it to know the details.
Parizaad
Parizaad has received an overwhelming applaud for showcasing an entire drama revolving around a man instead of a woman. I mean, enough with the Feminist approach and ‘Aurat March’ already, right?
Parizaad, a role lead by Ahmed Ali Akbar portrays an underprivileged boy from a small village who is mocked because of his dark complexion. More importantly, he is mocked by everyone because his name means ‘From the land of Fairies’. Nonetheless, he is great at studies, tutors local villagers and helps his friends attain better marks too. But is this it? His romance struggles are real and his overtures are always met with rejection because of his unpleasing appearance.

Ishq Hai
A love story with typical family struggles is a hit series all the fans can’t stop talking about. Danish Taimoor and Minaal Khan act alongside as lovers who cannot be united because of their family’s disagreement. Most importantly, Minaal Khan’s family doesn’t believe in love marriages and forces her to tie the knot with someone her family chooses.

Coming back to ‘Ishq Hai’, firstly the OST is awesome. Secondly, check out how Danish Taimoor and Minaal Khan uphold their relationship while their families are a huge hurdle.

Equally ideal for a 65-year-old while it is humorous to a 7-year-old. Ayeza Khan amazed us all with her new look as a carefree, dumb, witty and chipping girl. Also, her wardrobe designer takes the prize. She wore the best clothes and accessories a girl can dream about. Nonetheless, these beauties wore the best ensembles!
Desi slangs bring color to our National Language (Urdu). Significantly, slangs are a part of our daily vocabulary, mostly spoken by the younger crowd. Do you have a hard time understanding Pakistanis when you visit? You are not alone.
Interestingly, slang enhances communication and gets the point across without using too many phrases. While some are offensive and derogatory, today, we will only highlight the lighter side of commonly used slang words and phrases in Pakistan.
Here is a subversion of the standard variety of slang you will definitely come across in Pakistan.
Scene On Hai
This has to be the most commonly used slang in Pakistan for centuries. ‘Scene On Hai’, in particular means that the plan is solidified. However, it is an expression of excitement when friends are ready to party.
On the other hand, this exact same slang also refers to two people when they start dating. Friends usually point them out from the crowd and say ‘Scene on hai’, suggesting that their romantic relationship is on point and known to others too. Chill Maro Ever heard the expression ‘take a chill pill’? Chill Maro is the Pakistani version of the same. Basically, it implies that a certain person needs to relax and calm down.
While young boys use this slang to usually stop a fight or an argument, girls use it to tell their friends to relax if they are stressed or are frustrated.
Miss Karao/ Thud Karao/ Tuk Karao
Do you also know somebody who is a misfit in your group of friends? If yes, Miss Karao is the best term to use among friends suggesting you need to ‘Ditch or Leave’ that person out.
Also, if you want to ditch an idea or are not comfortable with it, you can simply say ‘Thud Karao or Miss Karao’ to tell the other person you are dissatisfied with the idea. This slang is for people, products, or ideas.
Burger Bacha
Well, innocent people are everywhere but Burger Bacha is one who is shy, innocent, cannot take a risk and is too nerdy. On the other hand, it is also an Urdu adaption of ‘Wannabe’s.
If someone calls you a Burger Bacha, you better change your lifestyle immediately.
Chuss Marna
This expression is popular among friends. Chuss Marna is simply spoken when someone says something stupid, juvenile, irrelevant, or silly. Boys love using this slang for friends who correspond with a phrase that does not make sense or is not accepted by the rest of the crowd.
Meter Ghoom Gaya Hai
Ever felt too angry but didn’t know what to say? Meter Ghoom Gaya hai is the ideal slang to use! This expression shows you are angry, and have reached your boiling point.
Screw Dheela Hai
If you have a tendency to act crazy or silly, people will say ‘Iska Screw Dheela Hai’. This actually means, ‘This person is crazy! We hypothetically think that the brain has screws, and Dheela means loose. So when someone acts Loco, people say his screw is loose.
Jugaarh Lagana
We all look for effortless solutions by hook or by crook once in a while. Interestingly, Jugaarh Lagana is exactly the same. If you get caught in an unpleasant situation when you need to fix something immediately, you say ‘Jugaarh Lagana parey ga’
Syaapa Pae Gaya
Every family goes through trouble. When a few family members complicate things that cause trouble, Punjabis say ‘Syaapa Pae Gaya’. This means, ‘A mess is created’ and that things are getting out of hand.
Patli Gali se Niklo
Do you also love not being part of a feud? Well, Patli Gali se Nikalna means exactly the same. If you want to take a shortcut and bypass the trouble, simply take the short route out of trouble. Patli means thin and Gali means street. Hence, altogether it means, take the next thin street to stay out of trouble!
Durr Fiteh Muh
This one is a derogatory comment but Punjabi Aunties use it a lot and do not literally mean the exact translation of it. When translated, it means ‘ May your face be black with smoke’. Well, it is basically a Face-palm for Pakistanis but in a much ruder way.
Vaari Javaan
Vaari Javaan is an adorable slang used to show you love someone or someone’s look so much. We use it to indicate extreme happy emotions such as love, fealty, and devotion towards someone special.
Moreover, Aunties or older ladies from the crowd love rotating and curling their palms next to their ears while using this slang. It sounds weird when you put it in words!
Bachi Set Karna
Does your friend want to ask someone out? If yes, tell him ke tum ‘Bachi Set Karlo’. This phrase refers to a boy sealing the deal with a girl or when he is hooking up.
Chamcha
Well, in literal terms, Chamcha is a spoon in Urdu. However, when used as slang, it means ‘teacher’s pet’. You can also say ‘Mama ka Chamcha or Dadi ka Chamcha’. Basically, when someone is too attached to the other person, you call him a chamcha of the other person.
Dhakan
Again, Dhakan in literal terms means a bottle’s cap. Nonetheless, this word is used for a person who is dumb and cannot comprehend common situations. If your little brother does not understand his math lesson, you can call him a dhakan!
Dasti Kaam Karna
Ooh, are you ever in a hurry? If you want to get something done at the speed of light, you should do it ‘Dasti’, meaning immediately. Moreover, if you want another person to do something swiftly, you can say, ‘Dasti Karo’.
Anni Machana
Anni Machadi is the Urdu slang for Epic. If something or someone is too extraordinary or brilliant, Anni Machadi is the right slang to use at that time.
Abey Wah!
A special common for Karachiities (people from Karachi), Abey is a word you will probably hear 100 times a day. Abey can be used with any word like Wah, Abey Kyun, Abey Larkay, or can be used on its own too.
Abey basically means ‘Hey you’ or ‘You there’ and people from Karachi use it nonstop.
Kya Baat hai Yaar
If something is spectacular or better than your expectations, you can say ‘Kya baat hai yaar’
Tons of actors pave their way into the Pakistani Media Industry every year but only a few secure their mark in the hearts of zillion fans. Some are gorgeous while others are filled with talent. Some enter the glamorous world via family names while others start from the bottom. Whatever the case, the truth is that hard work, consistency, friendly nature and a committing attitude is what it takes to reach the top.
Accordingly, Maya Ali fits the perfect description of an avid actor we all love. Interestingly, she started slow and low, but rose to the top with good looks, an awesome attitude, and stood ground.
Here’s appreciating Maya Ali and taking notes on the top 6 reasons why she is the talk of the town.
From Vj to TV Actress to Movie Star
Maryam Tanveer Ali, more popularly known as Maya Ali was an average girl as a teenager. She was born into a strict household. She would go to school, later play basketball and come home as we all did as children.
However, Maya Ali paved her way into the Pakistani media industry by saying ‘Yes’ to every opportunity she got. Indeed, when she was interning after her Mass Communications degree at a production house, a TV host left the spot open. Apparently upon asking her to fill it, she somehow terribly failed the audition.
Nonetheless, she hosted a program at PTV wonderfully later. She became a VJ for a few years and opted to become an actress as soon as the door to success opened up.
Besides awesome TV dramas such as Dyar-e-dil, Mann Mayal and Pehli si Mohabbat, Maya Ali also featured in Pakistani movies. They include Teefa in Trouble and Parey Hut Love. Moreover, she received the best drama actress award in 2017 for Mann Mayal. Moreover, The IPPA award for best actor female in 2019 for Teefa in Trouble.
She shifts all exterior negativity into positivity
Another amazing quality she possesses is how she shifts all the negative comments into positive energy to make a cool comeback.
She mentioned in an interview how her colleagues made fun of her when she failed her first audition. She was auditioning for a TV host for Samaa TV. Instead of shutting in, she tried even harder and secured the spot within days.
On the other hand, she worked with Khawar Riaz for a still photography campaign. Apparently, he exclaimed how Maya can never be an actress because of her bulkiness. Can you guess what Maya Ali did?
She took the comment positively and worked out to lose weight. Later, she auditioned for Haissam Hussain and debuted in Durr-e-Shahwar alongside Sanam Baloch.
Isn’t her attitude absolutely inspiring?
She is Humble, Friendly and Easy to work with
Unlike many other actresses in the same industry, Maya Ali is humble, down to earth and a friendly person to work with. Interestingly, she always works with a positive attitude, be it in feature films or Pakistani dramas. Her colleagues reveal how reading lines with her is very comfortable. Also, she never creates a fuss about her makeup, choice of clothes, or her resting spots while shooting.
Additionally, she always meets her fans with open arms and is not pompous at all. Check out her awesome song alongside Shehryar Munawar. This girl has some serious moves!
Maya Ali is very Ambitious
Even though she belongs to a very strict family, she chose a path to gain the spotlight because she is ambitious and determined. She mentioned in an interview in Rewind with Samina Peerzada that she loves living in a fantasy world and cannot stop dreaming about her future. Interestingly, she also added how she loved talking to her dolls and to herself in the mirror.
Indeed, she loves taking everyone’s opinions and insights but always does what her heart tells her to do. Maya stated that she thinks and takes final decisions right before hitting the bed every day.
She aces her dramas and movies but she equally shines bright in TV commercials. Maya Ali is the Brand Ambassador for Shuaukat Khanum Cancer hospital and the same for Quetta Gladiators. Moreover, she also worked for brands including Lux, QMobile, Sprite, and Diva.
She is a True Foodie
Believe it or not, Maya Ali is a true foodie at heart. She prefers non-vegetarian food and loves eating everything. Her favorite food includes Aloo ka Paratha, Biryani, and Pizza. However, she equally enjoys other cuisines.
She is Bubbly, Sweet and even Naughty
Can you imagine Maya Ali being naughty? Well, here’s a small insight into her childhood. Apparently, her brother Affan and Maya Ali went door to door to ring bells, only to run away and tease all the neighbors!
Also, most people don’t know how Maya was a tom-boy as a kid. She would rather play basketball and cycle around instead of playing with dolls indoor. However, she did own dolls!
Additionally, long ago during her childhood, Maya Ali called out her father’s name ‘Tanveer’ to pick at him and actually received a tight slap as a token of disapproval.

Today, Pakistani fashion consumes our lives like a well-oiled machine that is fuelled by the inexhaustible fashion industry. Moreover, it is so highly maintained by fashion enthusiasts that keep up with the ever-changing trends. Additionally, social media makes sure fashion embeds in our soul and is always significant in the picture.
However, this was not always true. Fashion trends worked their way for years before they were altered. Today, it should be applauded if a trend lasts even 6 months.
Wedding dresses from the past were extraordinarily simple, elegant, did not need a designer to craft them and lasted years until they were passed down to sisters or daughters.
Today, we want to shed light on the transformation of wedding dresses from the past century to reveal how much our fashion industry has evolved. Continue reading to find out how it all started.
1940’s
Wedding dresses were mainly inspired by the Indian culture right after Pakistan came into existence in 1947. While the bride’s dress was uncomplicated with only a few laces here and there, grooms adorned plain shirwani or kurta pyjama.
Gharara was the talk of the town in 1940’s. While all the women wore ghararas on a daily basis as well, wearing a slightly festive version of the same was preferred on the big day. The inspiration came from our founder, Quaid-e-Azam’s sister Fatima Ali Jinnah. Pakistan’s national dress for women was also a gharara paired with a kameez.
Brides chose brightly colored ghararas made out of Zarbakh or silk with nice pure chaandi (silver) work on them. The shirts were kept plain while the dupattas were also designed with chaandi embellishments.
1950’s
Nothing much changed over the 10 years in Pakistan taking wedding dresses into account. Women of Pakistan were stylish, yet very effortless. Interestingly, most of the ghararas were hand crafted at home by mothers and khalas.
The wedding season was enjoyed to the full by preparing hand stitched, home crafted clothing for the bride from 3-4 months prior to the wedding. Sisters, cousins and all other women of the house got together to embroider, add laces and finally stitch ghararas for the bride.
Again, men wore simple white, off-white, cream or black shirwani with straight pants.
1960’s
1960’s brought fashion into perspective. Interestingly, Sughra Kazmi was the pioneer bridal revivalist and a couturier. Additionally, Maheen Khan was the only seamstress in Lahore and she started her business from her veranda.
Interestingly, Maheen Khan worked with multiple French designers, Stockman mannequins and created a new path towards fashion industry for Pakistani women.
Indeed, the color choices for the bride became brighter and more combos started pouring in. Different shades of reds, maroons, blues and greens were preferred.
The dress material shifted from pure silk to tissue or a combination of both. Heavy jewelry became the new fashion trend. Brides wore 3 necklaces, a nice tikka, a nath on the nose, a beautiful jhumar on the head and many bangles.
1970’s
The 70’s were an interesting decade for wedding formals. While the Punjabi culture kicked in and brought cool clothing designs in the form of shalwar kameez, Urdu speaking families stuck to ghararas. Further, 70’s brides adorned beautifully designed shalwar kameez for their Mayyun and Mehndi. The colors revolved around shades of yellow, mustard and greens.
However, the main wedding events including Baraat and Valima saw reds and greens. Interestingly, the choice of cloth shifted from tissue to intricate designs of jamawar while the dupattas were made out of net, chiffon or silk.
Accordingly, men wore shirwani for baraat and a 3 piece western suit for valima.
Punjabi shalwar kameez’
1980’s
With the advent of Indian films, glamorous clothes gained the spotlight. Ghararas got paired with shorter shirts to enhance the curves and ‘lehngas’ were the new in!
Nince flared lehngas with usually thigh length, plain shirt got featured. However, the dupatta stole the show due to heavy lappa, gotaa and chaandi work on it.
Jamawar was still the best choice for ghararas and lehngas. We saw a comeback of tissue for shirts and dupattas. The wedding dress colors shifted from deep reds to floral pinks, shocking pink, greens combined with pinks while gold enhanced the overall look.
1990’s
By the end of 1980’s, names such as Bunto Kazmi, Nilofer Shahid, Rizwan Beyg, Shamaeel and Amir Adnan became the talk of the town. 1989 saw the first Pakistani fashion show featuring Maheen Khan alongside Freiha Altaf. Hence, Karachi rose up as Pakistan’s fashion capital.
While hiring a designer was a big deal in early 1990’s, brides begged their parents to get them uniquely crafted attires to look different. The designers charged a lot but created beautiful wedding attires for both, the bride and the groom.
Since photography also went up a notch, spending money on professionally designed clothing made sense now. In particular, a combination of reds and gold paved its way back in for baraat. On the other hand, Valima brides chose emrald greens, turquoise, fresh pink and shades of blue.
The makeup revolution was another factor that enhanced the bride’s overall look. Smokey eyes paired with popping colors of lip stains was the fashion trend.
Men on the other hand wore shirwani with shalwaar and a nice matching qulla (headgear). They still chose to wear a 3 piece suit for valima.
2000’s
2000 was a brand new era that brought many opportunities with it. Since the fashion enthusiasts had graduated from the Pakistani School of Fashion Design Lahore, the structure of Pakistani fashion shifted forever.
Ghagra and Choli paved its way into our world from the Indian movies and everyone wanted to rock that look. New fashion designers such as HSY, Maheen Kardar, Nomi Ansari, Maria B and Kamiar Rokni gained the spotlight for wedding formals.
Brides wore beautiful lehngas with waist length cholis, barely covering their slim waists. Some even chose to show theirs. The fashion trend took a turn towards monogamous and one-tone color combinations. Specifically, a one tone red dress from top to bottom was considered supreme. Another color that made its way to the top was ‘Peach’. Peach or tea-pink gave a nice soft look for brides on their valimas.
Another thing that changed was the style and choice of embellishment on the bridal dresses. Heavy stone work, lappa, embroidery and tilla was seen as opposed to gotaa and chaandi. Now, the choli also had matching kaam on it while the lehngas and dupataas were full of intricate designs like never before.
2005

By mid 2000’s, important fashion events such as Lux Style Awards and Carnivale de Couture gave Pakistani designers nice platforms to flaunt their art. New names added the fashion designer list every 6 months and Pakistan saw a bang in the fashion industry like never before.
While professional designers showcased their ideas and designs in their boutiques, local people were equally interested in buying them.
Ghagra choli and lehnga choli was still the trendy deal but the choice of color combos, style of embellishment and embroidery work shifted a lot. Colors such as peach, tea-pink, beige and gold, maroon and green, orange and red made to the top.
The embellishments got larger and colored strips of jamawar outlined the dresses. Another cool factor included men wearing shirwani with qullas that matched the bride’s dress.
2010
Interestingly, Shararas came in fashion in 2010. In sum, similar style of pants as ghararas, but with a less flow and a one piece flared lower.
Moreover, unique color combinations with loads of lappa, tilla, stonework came into existence. Color combinations such as sea-green and silver, maroon with beige, purple and blues came in fashion.
2015
2015 was the year when nude colors gained the instant spotlight. Basic beige, light brown, white, cream, pearl white and similar dull shades made their way to the bride’s outfit with a contrasting red or maroon dupatta.
2015 was also the year when long, ankle length shirts were enjoyed as compared to shorter shirts. It was the same for formal wear. A shift from simple lehngas and short shirts went straight to long, A-line ankle length shirts paired with either churridar pyjama or sharara.
2020
Lots of pearls, intricate work, different embellishments and textures are the new bridal trend. Moreover, long maxi dresses with can-can and poof look gorgeous. On the other hand, gharga choli made its way back to the hood but limp ghagras won’t cut the slack. Super flared, can-can poofed ghagras are the real deal today.
Moreover, colors such as slivers, pearl whites, peaches, deep reds and dull gold are the new trend.
Additionally, the cutwork and handwork on the bridal dresses is so intricate and equally expensive. The best part is that grooms wear trendy clothes too that showcase matching colored outfits as the bride. While some grooms wear jamawar waist coats to match the bride’s dress, others wear shirwanis with unique cuts, designs and colors.
The main cloth textures this decade are chiffon and net for brides and jamawar and satin for men.
