Stay Fit Under Lockdown The Malaika Arora Way

    0
    Malaika Arora

We all want to look fit and feel amazing like Malaika Arora.

But it can be tough, particularly in the present circumstances. The lockdown has affected some of the world’s healthiest, strongest, and fit people. This includes, of course, every Pakistani and Indian woman’s fit benchmark, Malaika Arora.

Malaika has by far the most followed fitness and lifestyle celebrity from the subcontinent, with millions of fans across the subcontinent following her on Instagram and her other social media pages.

But how exactly do superfit celebrities like Malaika differ from people like you and me? They stop making excuses and get off their butts, for one.

While being physically healthy and owning good looks has always been fairly essential, it has truly become a necessity in this day and age. If you choose to be a couch potato while trying innovative recipes, not only will you become super lazy but will also gain the not-so-needed extra pounds.

Answer to your prayers? Me! So, without further ado, take a look below and check out the easiest ways to lose the flabbiness and stay super fit effortlessly.

I compiled this list after extensively studying the lifestyle and at-home workout regimes of Malaika Arora alongside other famous fitness influencers; while also seeking the advice of health experts from the WHO and beyond.

    Set Your Body Clock Right

    Malaika Arora and friends sleeping

Flow with your circadian rhythm and the lockdown won’t get to you. I promise!

Staying up late, watching movies, and playing games on the phone has become our second nature. In sum, being house arrested means more time for the devices and less time for getting in touch with our natural needs.

Hence, setting the morning alarms to no later than 8 am (9 am MAX), and sleeping as early as possible will help regulate our body clock and help us stay fresh and rejuvenated. Additionally, we will have so much time to indulge in our hobbies, pursue our studies or finish our house chores timely.

Furthermore, getting a healthy dose of vitamin D is essential. If, like back home in Pakistan, your local authorities allow you to sit on your terrace and driveway for a while, please do so. Gleam in the golden rays of the Sun and do yourself some good.

Do Your Share of Household Chores

Believe it or not, doing household chores isn’t as mundane and exhausting as you would have it. Something as simple as cooking can help you stay active and burn calories. Not only are you standing for minutes (sometimes hours) but you use your arm muscles and brain while steering the ship in the kitchen.

What if you want something more challenging? Well, you can always start mopping the floor. Try using a flat, microfiber towel by rubbing it back and forth while firmly sitting in a squat position. If you think a minute goes by too quickly, try this, and every second will count!

Jokes apart, this exercise is tried and tested by your truly, and trust me when I say that my legs literally feel as strong as Wonder-woman today!

These squats will help strengthen your quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves. If you want that Malaika Arora bod, you better get working on those quads and hamstrings!

Moreover, this exercise will get you warmed up, creating an ideal anabolic environment (building muscle mass). Perfect for fitting into your old pants within days, eh! Do this at least 5 times a week and flaunt the results all over social media.

As a bonus, you get a shiny clean floor!

    Learn to stretch and relax

COVID-19 is as worrying as it can be and the main purpose behind this blog is to help keep you occupied in healthy activities rather than stress you further.

Hence, instead of hammering yourself to achieve the impossible, it is better to learn something easy and doable.

For instance, take ‘stretching’ into account. Stretching is super easy, fun, and totally relaxing. Not only will you allow your muscles to stretch and unwind but will also mentally recoup and freshen up. Hence, just put on your favorite tunes (slower the better), turn them up, hit the floor, and stretch away.

Make sure to follow celebrities like Malaika, Ayesha Omer and J-Lo on instagram to learn new stretching techniques every now and then.

Remember when you used to explore all kinds of positions with your body when you were a kid? Interestingly, you can still do that. No judgment. Stretch your arms out, legs out and curl your back at weird angles and enjoy yawing while you are at it.

    Master Hollow Body Holds

You will be shaking and shivering if you are doing it properly!

Since Blake Lively is my favorite actress, it is imperative that I follow her workouts, especially by her trainer ‘Don Saladino’. His list of trained celebs also includes Ryan Renolds, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, and many more. Point being, he is the master of all workouts!

Don Saladino once mentioned that the hollow body holds might not seem too much on paper or on videos, but they are ideal for building core strength, improving endurance, and shaping the toughest muscles (abs). Celebrities like Malaika Arora swear by these holds. Never tried them? Here’s what to do.

Follow these instructions: 1. Lie down on your back on the floor. Keep your arms on the sides and legs bent upwards. Draw your belly button in, pressing the back into the floor as much as you can. Slowly lift your shoulder off the floor, allowing the abs to contract and the spine to lengthen. Hold this position for at least 40 seconds and release. Continue indulging in this simple exercise 5 times or more daily. I usually do this while binging Netflix.

Staircase is ideal for leg workouts

Not a fan of leg workout? I can totally relate. I hate it too! But we cannot let our legs become fat, frail, and chubby. You would be hardpressed to find an Instagram influencer without great quad muscles. For these reasons, the stairs are the best option to choose when we cannot hit the gym. Since everyone has stairs at home, this tip is pretty easy to follow.

Simply climb up and down the stairs at least 20 times a day and notice awesome results within a week. In case you live on a single floor, take a foot stool, climb up and down 50 times, completing 3 sets, making the total count 150. You will love the feeling. Moreover, if you live in an apartment building, choose stairs over the elevator.

Keep Meal Time and Work separate

Eating a scrumptious cheese sandwich for lunch is too easy when you are simultaneously checking your office emails. While it might seem like healthy multitasking, in reality, it just isn’t. Why do you ask? Well, because stress and tension affect our digestive system. Hence, when we are in fight-or-flight mode, our body shifts blood from the gut to all the working muscles, especially our brain. This does not make our digestive process quick or friendly.

Thereby, it is ideal to eat while seated in a relaxed healthy environment, preferably sitting next to your family. Also, being mindful of our eating and chewing without unnecessary distractions is a key heuristic toward good health. Hence, stay fit during COVID-19 lockdown by keeping both these activities separate.

Move your arms like Malaika Arora for upper body strength

Most ladies, like me, tend to pile on fat around the triceps and biceps. God knows how hard it is to get rid of it. Hence, if you are already familiar with the awesome arm rotations to lose the arm junk, do them. If not, check out an easy arm workout tutorial (without weights) and follow it step by step.

Age should not be a factor. Malaika is 46 and has arms that would make any 20-year old envious.

If you are not as tech-savvy as some, don’t fret. I have a tip for you, too. Just put on your favorite music (Latin pop and Reggaeton work best for me), and stretch your arms to the side, flexing them up and down, left, right and center. Simply flow to the rhythm and move your arms in all directions at different speeds. My favorites are triceps extensions, triceps dips, arm circles, and push-backs. Check out this awesome arm exercise tutorial. This is my go-to.

    Don’t Just Fixate on Survival

What’s the fun in that? Instead of focusing on survival and how to tackle COVID-19 lockdown, look on the bright side and find cool opportunities, and pursue them. Yes, times will become harder. Yes, the lockdown might turn into curfew too. However, in order to stay sane, trying something new once in a while is necessary.

Always wanted to paint? Go paint. Do you love foreign languages? Take an online course and learn a language. Laugh, dance, take online courses, or start teaching online. Just have fun with your life and do what you always wanted to do and couldn’t find time for.

    Stay Productive And Mentally Active

‘An empty mind is a devil’s workshop’ is true to the core. Our brain needs a healthy workout in these tough times more than our bodies.

One way would be to work from your home just as you do at the office. Sit on a makeshift work table and set standard work hours for yourself.

Not doing a 9-to-5 job in your regular life? Start writing.

Jotting down your thoughts, ideas, plans for the future, or writing jokes, poems, or stories from the past can help you heal. In short, the act of writing can help unlock your feelings, enabling you to begin a much-needed conversation, throwing light on aspects you never thought you could put into words.

Merely keep a small diary or a journal with you, take out an hour to write, doodle, and express your inner thoughts. Share it with your friends on social media or keep it a secret. The choice is yours.

    Breathe Right, Live Right

We all start breathing as soon as we step into this world. We have been breathing since! Weird when you think like that. Anyhow, the fact is that we are all too fast. We live our lives too fast. We eat fast. Breathe fast. Meditate. In order to master the art of living, one needs to learn how to breathe like a baby.

Diaphragmatic breathing plays a crucial role. Slowly inhaling, allowing more air to enter our lungs helps our breathing pattern overall. Indulging for 5 minutes daily will help you in the long run.

    Follow these instructions:

    • Sit straight or lie down on the floor
    • Relax your shoulders
    • Ease into the space around you
    • Put one hand on your chest and the other below the rib cage
    • Breathe in slowly through the nose, feeling your stomach expand
    • Hold it for as long as you can
    • Breathe out slowly through your mouth, feeling your stomach contract
    • Repeat

I hope these tips play part in helping you lift your morale during the COVID-19 lockdown.

While looking like Malaika Arora or the celebrity of your choice may seem like a far-fetched goal, it’s often surprising what we can achieve with a little hard work and consistency.

At last, if dieting is big on your agenda, make sure to check out this great diet for staying fit. Feel free to add more tips in the comments below.

Rock: How A Presumably Dead Genre Is Surviving During COVID-19

    2

Life as we have known it will never be the same thanks to COVID-19. Social distancing powered by government lockdowns will have deep-rooted effects on everyone in the coming years, and it will take more than just a few years for things to get back to how they were – even if we come up with a potent vaccine this in 2020.

Like every industry; the music industry is suffering as well. Sales of physical albums had already plummeted due to an exponential rise in the quantity of free content available online. P2P software played their part and here we are; in a post COVID-19 world, where like many other industries, the music industry too; has collapsed.

Today, keeping Rock n’ Roll, Metal, and their sub-genres in mind, I’ll choose to debase the phrase we have all heard of in the last two decades about every other day, “ROCK IS DEAD”. Why? Simply because we see artists from these very genres thriving, touring, interacting with a very wide and diverse set of fans all the time. In comes Covid-19 and bam!

Besides, it would be interesting to see how the underdogs of the current music scene are surviving, now that their foremost source of income (Concerts and Tours) has ceased to exist.

    CONCERTS

Concerts were one of the first events to get postponed and canceled along with sporting events when COVID-19 began to spread exponentially in Europe. Significantly, fans were heartbroken when they got to know that they won’t be able to witness their favorite band perform live. TOOL, KISS, RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE and DEVIN TOWNSEND were among the first performers to cancel their tours.

While this move was necessary; it absolutely destroyed the financial side of things for these artists. However, the show must go on and the rockers made sure that it does. Interestingly, they adapted quickly and transposed their acts for an online situation.

While people like DAVE GROHL got together with BBCRADIO and an ensemble of artistes to reproduce one of their hits, people like DEVIN TOWNSEND started performing as a one-band with backing tracks for a charitable cause. He and other artistes use Live stream as a mechanism to engage a global audience with their music, while serving noble causes.

Moreover, bands including THE ROLLING STONES, SAMMY HAGAR AND THE CIRCLE, INCUBUS and QUEEN  among many others jam online in front of an online audience. Some choose to do it for charitable causes while others prefer sending out good vibes. How cool is that?

    MEET AND GREET during COVID-19

Ever since the availability of music was made online; record labels have seen a continuous downward slope in terms of sales. Most artistes used to rely on heavy touring and VIP meet and greet events to generate a sizeable income. For obvious reasons; that cannot happen anymore.

That still does not quench the thirst of our favorite rockers of inspiring and getting inspired by their fans. For some, fan interaction is a must and bands have been speedy in figuring out an easier, more convenient way to interact with their fanbase. LIVESTREAM interactions! Many rockers have taken it up to their socials including Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and Facebook to intermingle with their fans.

Interestingly, people like CHRIS MARTIN from COLDPLAY popped their cherry in terms of online fan interactions after COVID-19. He played songs on people’s requests including a DAVID BOWIE cover as well.  People like NEIL DIAMOND and NEIL YOUNG have also resurfaced and interacted by playing for fans online. Who knew they would resort to this one day?

    Local Artists singing for Peace

Pakistani local favorites like Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam, Ali Sethi, and others are also contributing in these traumatic times. Ali Zafar just launched a new cover of the song ‘Faryad’, originally sung by Mangesh Karlata. He hopes it gives peace to everyone’s ears during these hard times.

On the other hand, Ali Sethi is coming LIVE through his official page to interact with his audience.

In other news, the girl band, Krewella teamed up with Nervo to create an inspiring single for their eager audience. The song is called ‘Goddess’. Check it out here.

NEW MATERIAL is in the cards

Regardless of what’s happening in the world right now, rockers are still churning out some sweet tunes to bang your head to. While most material that is being released today might have been in production or post-production stages since long, we are still getting premium tracks to rock to.

Famous acts such as GREEN DAY, SEPULTURA, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS, OZZY OSBOURNE, NINE INCH NAILS, PEARL JAM among many others have already released their latest work to a whole new world. While touring might not be on the cards at present, these and other artistes are putting out music videos and additional treats for their fans in support of their latest albums.

Major acts like DEEP PURPLE, STATIC-X, DEFTONES and BON JOVI among others are expected to release brand new material this year as well. Can’t wait!

    MERCHANDISE

When it comes to merchandise, it becomes pure business, doesn’t it? For this reason, KORN saw an opportunity and created customized surgical masks and fans went head over heels for it. Inevitably, they saw a considerable spike in the sales of their custom product. The product was sold out the last time I checked! Additionally, they have mentioned on their official website, “For every mask sold, all of Korn’s profits will be donated to Global Giving’s COVID-19 Relief Fund who is providing immediate and long-term relief and recovery to vulnerable communities on the front lines of this crisis.”On the other hand, other merchandise saw a dull period of sales after the pandemic hit the globe.

Equally important, bands including IRON MAIDEN, METALLICA, MEGADETH, DEFTONES, MASTODON and various others have enjoyed a steep upward curve of sales of their branded liquor. People have been ordering their favorite band’s beer by the gallons to spend their time in a much relaxed manner during lockdowns. I mean, lockdowns can have a positive side to them too, eh!

    NETWORK APPEARANCES

One of the most important appearances for any artist from any genre is to become visible on a late night talk show on TV. Famous shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and CONAN have huge fan-bases across the globe and it just makes sense that you take your latest product to these shows and showcase in front the world. However, most of these shows have abandoned their studio sets and have actually shifted to a more socially distant setup. Yes, it is mostly the host’s home with minimalistic or no crew at all.

How is that anything between a rocker and a global audience? THOME YORKE from RADIOHEAD joined The Tonight Show online and played one of his new tunes on the piano. I loved it! Likewise, other artistes join other hosts during their shows for a live performance and rock the hell out of everyone!

What the future holds, no one knows. What we do know is that ROCK is neither dead nor rare.  It is a community of intelligent people who have adapted to whatever Father Time has thrown at them and they have made it through so far. Fingers crossed. Hoping for the best.

Rishi Kapoor Will Be Missed For All These Reasons

We will miss you Chintu Ji! CurryFlow writer Miysha Usman remembers Bollywood legend Rishi Kapoor.

Rishi Kapoor, the iconic veteran actor, breathed his last on April 30, 2020. Death is, unfortunately, a sad reality of life and all of us must embrace it at some time. While he may have suddenly left us all, that definitely is no reason to forget him or to stop celebrating his accomplishments.

Unlike others in Kapoor family, Rishi Kapoor began his career in his adolescence. Interestingly, he won the National film award for the ‘Best Child Artist’ for his first film. I mean, wow! Then came along amazing Bollywood movies and almost all of them have left a lasting impression on us. Furthermore, perhaps one of the most appreciable traits of his character was the way he was able to seamlessly adapt to the role he was playing.

Behold Rishi Kapoor fans. Here’s taking a trip down memory lane and sending love and prayers to the dearly departed.

Hum Tum Ek Kamray Main Band Houn!

Rishi Kapoor entertained the masses for decades, generation over generation with this song and it still has not lost its charm. Some iconic songs from the era of his youth have become legacies and ‘Hu tum ek kamrey mein band hon’ is no exception. Epic would be the right word to describe it! Not only are the lyrics sensual, passionate and romantic, but the vulnerability portrayed by the young Rishi Kapoor is something we are in awe of till this day.

Each year songs are produced in humongous numbers, but only some of them manage to traverse time the way this song has done.

    His Style Quotient

    Rishi Kapoor on stage
    Rishi Kapoor on stage

Yves Saint Laurent rightly said, “Fashions fade, style is eternal”. This quote fits like a sleeve on the magnanimous personality of Rishi Kapoor. He frequently dressed in a suave manner with elegant suits. The picture above illustrates this perfectly: Rishi Kapoor looks timeless. The open collar, the suit, the colour combo – all hint at a gentleman well in touch with the prevailing trends. Whoever is in need of fashion advice, digging up pictures of Rishi Kapoor will definitely be a good idea!

Doesn’t he look super cute in this picture?

    Mera Naam Joker

Rishi Kapoor started his career with a heartrending performance as Raju in Mera Naam Joker. The 5-hour film is considered one of the most storied in Bollywood history. Today, the film is being remembered as the vehicle through which Rishi Kapoor stepped foot inside the industry which became his second home for decades to come.

Interestingly, it wasn’t as initially well-received as one might have thought. Critics complained about the length of the movie and the plot which was largely experimental. It went on to become a commercial failure.

However, like the pearl that comes out of its shell polished, bright, and shiny, the movie later came to be hailed as a cult classic. It is also considered as one of the best performances given by Rishi Kapoor. Given, the astounding performances he has delivered throughout his career, that’s definitely saying something. Now, this movie will be cherished even more.

    Do Dooni Chaar

Perhaps the most memorable thing about Do Dooni Chaar is the fact that Rishi Kapoor and Neeti Kapoor came together as an on-screen couple after about three decades. It was really cool! Needless to say, the fans swooned. The storyline was immensely relatable. Who here does not want to strive in every way possible in order to provide their family with a better life?

The character played by Rishi Kapoor in this film follows the struggle of a mathematics teacher, to ensure his family is able to live a better life. Further, it also shows the evils that can befall a person who tries to live beyond his means. In the movie, crooks who believe that grades can be bought to target the teacher. An amazing movie that kept the attention of the audience entrapped until the very last minute.

    Kapoor & Sons

Kapoor & Sons just ticks all the right boxes for me! Not only is the cast truly impeccable, but the characters assigned to each task are just perfect. From Alia Bhatt playing the part of a carefree young girl, to seeing Rishi Kapoor in prosthetics for the second time in his life, What a film it was! Moreover, for the second time in his life, he truly nailed it!

The movie hinged on bittersweet nostalgia, showing the perfection of an imperfect family. It is one of the movies which can be seen again and again without being bored. Too much drama, I tell you.

    Agneepath

Agneepath is a tribute to the inherent versatility that Rishi Kapoor has displayed in his acting. The stellar performance cast him in the role of a tyrant. I for one could never have imagined that an actor with the appearance of a cuddly uncle could have forged so seamlessly with an evil role.

Moreover in my opinion, Rishi Kapoor definitely added hundreds of names to his huge fan base by playing the perfect villainous act. His kohl-lined eyes, the traditional ‘Bhai log’ choker, and his rugged shalwar kameez totally stole the show. However, his expressions were exemplary as they totally dripped venom. This particular performance of his proved beyond the shadow of a doubt, that he can take up any role he sets his mind to.

    His Bond with Karishma Kapoor

It might sound like a weird thing to miss. Nonetheless, it was extremely difficult to digest the passing of ‘Chintu jee’ for the whole Kapoor clan. Believe it or not, Karishma Kapoor was very close to her uncle. Pictures posted on social media by Karishma Kapoor reminiscing about the way Rishi Kapoor being a constant and loving presence in her life, strikes chords of wistfulness now.

Now that he is gone, there will be a gaping hole, making us all miss Rishi Kapoor and his adorable pictures with his niece. Lovingly called ‘Chintu uncle’, his mere existence was cherished by his loved ones.

    His Wholesome Presence

Rishi Kapoor was loved by millions. What is truly amazing is that people from all over the Bollywood industry as well as the Pakistani media industry are now withering away in remorse at his passing. The ways in which his memories are being recalled by many of his colleagues and acquaintances makes it evident that he was loved by all who knew him.

Of course, Pakistani celebrities did not remain far behind in celebrating Rishi’s charm.

    His Thumkas

Bollywood is an industry that is fraught with dances at every turn. Rarely, if at all, will a movie be produced this doesn’t have dances included in one manner or the other. Even the most somber of storylines will incorporate dances in some sneaky way.

When it came to dancing, Rishi Kapoor managed to always provide an endearing performance. This was true all through his youth, right till his end. The way he danced, his composure and his moves will always bring smiles on the faces of his fans. And isn’t that just what every actor desires?

Despite his age, he delivered performances that would put much of the younger lot to shame. All this, done in a way which belied any vulgarity, any cause to grimace at all.

    Sense of Humor

Rarely do people have a sense of humor that is so tasteful that others are bound to take heed. Till his last days at the hospital, his sense of humor kept those around him entertained, which speaks volumes about the kind of person he was. Even when he was uncomfortable, pumped with drugs, and losing the long-drawn battle to cancer, he did not succumb to a manner that would make his caretakers suffer. How many of us can honestly say we are capable of doing something like that? Rishi Kapoor was a legend.

    Rishi Kapoor at Kapoor Haveli

India and Pakistan are rarely ever on the same page. There are political tensions, border issues, and what not. In the midst of all this, not even the stars and actors are spared. They too become entangled in the mesh that is secularism. Rishi Kapoor remained a staunch vocal supporter of the Indian Army during his last years on twitter.

Nonetheless, there are still many artifacts which pay homage to the fact that the countries have bonds which cannot be severed so easily. This picture of a young Rishi Kapoor standing outside the vast and expansive Kapoor Haveli in Peshawar is a testament to sweeter times. There are talks of now converting this haveli to a museum in an effort to preserve it.

Bollywood actors, in fact actors all over the world would do very well to take a leaf out of his book. He has left this world. Yes. But, through the journey of his life, he has also scattered various pearls of wisdom through his demeanor, his personality, his life.

Rishi Kapoor will truly be missed.

Dabbe: The Possession Is Terrifying Pakistanis On Netflix

    0

Turkish film Dabbe: The Possession has taken Pakistan by storm. COVID-19 has led to millions flocking Netflix for some much needed escape from the horrors of real life. One way many choose to do this, naturally, is by watching hair-rising horror flicks. At present, the Netflix library in Pakistan (and other nations across South Asia and the Middle East) is relatively limited in both variety as well as quality.

We wouldn’t be surprised if you managed to watch every reasonably rated horror film on Netflix in the last month. This leads us to introduce you to one of the hidden gems on Netflix Pakistan. We are talking about the Turkish horror film series, Dabbe (d@bbe).

    Dabbe: The Possession poster
    Dabbe: The Possession poster

The series just might be ‘perfect’ horror for Pakistanis, South Asians and Muslims in general. For one, it delves into the jinn mythology (or reality as we prefer to label) rather than the apparition / ghost framework that defines most Hollywood flicks. If you enjoy demon infestation and excorcism films that Hollywood makes every now and then, you will be in love with Dabbe!

Netflix currently has 3 of the 6 films in the series. Luckily, Dabbe 3 and Dabbe 5 are widely considered as the best films in the series, and are available for your viewing ‘pleasure’. Most of the talk on social media has revolved around Dabbe: The Possession, which has amassed a cult following on the internet since its release.

Let’s look deeper into what makes Dabbe: The Possession (and the series as a whole) tick for viewers like us.

    Djinns and Religious Inspiration

    Dabbe: The Possession scene
    Dabbe: The Possession scene

The director, Hasan Karacadag takes full luxury in adding his own spin to Islamic traditions and post-Islamic mythologies surrounding djinns. To make his end product more relevant for potential foreign viewers, he also adds elements from Christian demonology. The effect is obvious; D@bbe builds it’s legitimacy by banking on beliefs that billions of people around the world hold true.

    Black Magic and Familial Animosities

    Screenshot from Dabbe: The Possession
    Screenshot from Dabbe: The Possession

D@bbe films glues viewers together through complex stories of revenge, hatred and pain that merge characters with their pasts. Each Dabbe film uses a common theme: the use of black magic in inflicting extreme pain. For those who have grown up in Pakistan, India or Bangladesh, this is a common theme you here so often. Undoubtedly, black magic and superstition go hand-in-hand as a part of the desi experience of growing up.

    Turkish Subculture

    Turkish Village
Turkish village from Dabbe: The Possession

There is no doubting that Turkish culture has continued to challenge India as the entertainment source with the most influence over Pakistanis.

Dabbe shows us a side of Turkey very few have seen on their visit to the beautiful country. It employs imagery and settings such as secluded villages to luxury suburban villas; the film’s setting is relatable yet distant.

If you have ever gone off the beaten track during your visit to Turkey and managed to see such destinations, Dabbe: The Possession will be a nostalgic (albeit terrifying) treat.

    Rationality vs. Faith

    Scene from Dabbe The Possession
    Scene from Dabbe The Possession

This is perhaps D@bbe’s USP (unique selling proposition. The film has a rather intelligent take on faith and the ongoing struggle with rationality. Dabbe 3 and 6 in particular explore the struggle between the psychiatric sciences against the phenomenon of ‘possession’. Unsurprisingly, with this being a horror film, superstition supersedes skepticism in the end. Considering how rigid and condescending these more rationalist characters are, the viewer almost begs for this.

    The Verdict

Go to any movie review site where Dabbe: The Possession is listed. Without exception, a sizeable number of reviewers will rank the film as one of the scariest they have ever seen. This is not a coincidence. The film takes the concept of black magic, voodoo and revenge to a whole new level by mixing them with Islamic concepts of djinns.

Nevertheless, we must warn you that the films do suffer from poor graphics. This is understandable considering the low budget as well as the director’s idiosyncratic editing style. Hasan Karacadag has a tendency to take a perfect horror setting and attempt to spice it up by mixing in hand-cam and CCTV footage alongsidean array of B-grade horror devices (filters, disorienting cuts and special effects).

Moreover, it is also incredibly useful when official meetings are concerned. With Zoom, not only are official meetings easier, convenient, and cost-effective but the user-friendly interface is what I like the most Other than that, Zoom is ideal for online therapy sessions too. Ideally, you don’t even have to put a halt on your child’s education. Zoom with the teacher, add a few more class-fellows to the call and you are good to go!

    Last Day on Earth: Survival

This app is bound to get you hooked. My husband plays this allllll the time! Last Day On Earth: Survival is a survival shooter game set in a post-zombie-apocalypse world after the year 2027 (When the virus outbreak actually happens). It is one of the best games out there to play during COVID19 lockdowns as it is extensively time-consuming.

Moreover, it manages to keep the end-user interested via Single Player and Multi-player interfaces which allow one to incorporate a wide array of both Melee weapons and Firearms to deal with the infected. Additionally, the player stays super engaged while building the base to keep himself safe from the zombies, raiders, and other users (who might visit your base and steal your valuable belongings).

It is a definite must-have app as it is not only extremely entertaining but it also polishes your survival skills, (as far as the thought process goes, at least!) You will find an almost unlimited amount of challenges to keep you busy and safe at home.

    Tik Tok

As cliché as it sounds, TikTok deserved a mention! This is one app, I am pretty sure everyone has heard of. I mean, ‘Famous’ is TikTok’s middle name!  Even the pandemic couldn’t change its fate.

Believe it or not, it saw a considerable surge in the number of users once lockdowns were enforced in various countries. Most celebs use this app too, maybe that’s why there is hype. I think I need to try it now. (If my hubby allows it- he kind of hates it). Why? Because it does have certain connotations of being vulgar, nonetheless, I truly believe that the way we use it is in our own hands.

For instance, celebrities like Gordon Ramsey are putting out videos that they have made with other family members. The videos are fun, entertaining, and lighthearted. So basically, fun for the entire family! The app gives an opportunity to make videos up to a maximum length of 15 seconds. In the video, the user can dance, sing, lip-sync, or attempt various challenges that are trending across the internet. All in all, it is an amazing app to kill time during the incredibly long lockdown days.

    Houseparty

Well, a Houseparty is exactly what we all need at the moment. And, my friends, with the app, it’s what we are promised too! This app was launched back in 2016. However, back then, it didn’t gain much momentum. Then, along came the dreaded coronavirus and the accompanying lockdown. Suddenly, it is the app that has become a household name and for good reason too.

Houseparty is just what is needed to enter an alternate virtual reality, where instead of being cooped up at home alone, we are having a good time with loved ones via a video call. You might be wondering what’s so special about this particular app? Well, there are so many others that offer the facility of video calling, but what makes this social networking app fun is that along with the video, there are also fun games that can be played in-app while chatting.

Another ingenious feature is the presence of virtual rooms. Users can switch between them much like moving between rooms in an actual party! Cool, isn’t it?

    Quiz Up

No harm at all in building up our knowledge banks a little while we are confined at home, is there? Quiz Up is a trivia game with over 600,000 questions hailing from over 1,200 topics. These topics revolve around basic mathematics to general knowledge, to history to geography. You name it, it’s there. Which means that there is something for everyone! It sounds like the perfect way to get our brain juices flowing. The game is available for both Android and iOS which means you can play with your friends, no matter what device they use.

    Aaptiv

Enough with the fun, games, and chatter. Lockdown or no lockdown, health is wealth and we all know that very well. However, lethargy and general laziness tends to creep up on us when we are trapped at home. It also means that physical exercise is severely inhibited. However, we need to remember that now more than ever, we need to boost our immune system through any means possible. This is where Aaptiv jumps in.

With Aaptiv, you will practically have a personal trainer in your phone. There are different exercise options available such as cardio, strength training or stretching as well as different accompanying audios. Definitely a winner for me.

    Ludo

Whoever thought of taking the cult favorite board game Ludo to the digital medium was a true genius I tell you. Social distancing and isolation becomes a blur as one gets engrossed in the game. As with the board game, up to 4 players can participate in the game. Definitely an excellent way to while away the time.

In-game chat options, and the choice to play with friends almost makes it seem as if the game is being played over an actual board. The nostalgia though is something I must warn you about – it does make you think of the time when we took meeting our loved ones for granted. Sigh.

    SuperCook

See, now food is life! Literally. Since all the fancy restaurants have been closed and take away/delivery aren’t very safe options given the current situation, cooking is the way to go. The best part about SuperCook, and also one of the main reasons it is highly recommended nowadays, is that recipes can be sought in accordance with the ingredients available.

Truly, a God sent! While it provides us with some welcome relief during lockdown, at the same time, it is also a wonderful app for when this situation is over.

    Stop, Breathe and Think

Like I said earlier as well, the current times are hard. Of course, mental stress and anxiety is part and parcel of this terrifying virus. However, we need to take measures to ensure some degree of control and meditation is an excellent way to do just that.

Through mindful breathing and a focus on mental well-being, the app will help to reduce stress levels as well as help you sleep better! Furthermore, this is one activity which is relevant for everyone. So why wait? Simply download this amazing app, take chill pill, relax and relieve all the stress.

    For our Little Friends!

    Teach your Monster to Read

We have to remember, it’s not just the grown-ups who are struggling. The lockdown has also confined our little ones. Rather than just being frustrated, they are also bewildered as they cannot yet comprehend the situation. What can work wonders is keeping them occupied. Probably, this is also the only way to keep them out of mischief which just seems to follow them everywhere!

Plopping them down in front of the TV is one way for sure. And hey, no judging – we are all doing the best we can. However, apps such as this one can be a constructive way to utilize screen time. It incorporates phonics and reading into a game, helping toddlers and preschoolers learn without even knowing it! Try it.

    YouTube Kids

I reiterate – this is a judgment-free zone! With our house help away, parents are overwhelmed with all the work piling up. Further, those who are working from home have to juggle work meetings, tasks, chores, and kids as well. It isn’t humanly possible to be constantly designing activities for kids to keep busy. Therefore, a little time spent watching mind-numbing cartoons aren’t a bad idea. YouTube Kids is a wonderful app for when you need to plunk your kids in front of the TV.

It keeps them engaged with countless videos. Allowing you the quick break you need, or peace for that office meeting. Also, there is a lot of kid-friendly content according to the kids age, and if you pick some videos out beforehand, kids will be engaged watching something they will learn from. My little one learnt drawing and coloring hacks!

Of course, this is a time in which everyone is under immense pressure. The threat of catching the virus, coupled with the stress of being indoors for large amounts of time, working from home, all of these along with other factors are without a doubt weighting quite heavily on everyone’s minds. Therefore, it is essential that we all keep busy as best as we can. And, no one said lockdown has to be boring. Download your favorite app and let us know below in the comments.

18 Popular Pakistani Food Favorites To Get You Hooked

    1

Pakistani food is popular throughout the world for a reason. While we read a lot about the Butter Chickens, Niharis, Biryanis, and Karahi, what about the reason you fell in love with Pakistani food in the first place?

In this list, I purposely leave out main course dishes and focus instead on popular easy-to-make starters, appetizers, desserts, and beverages that are an essential part of Pakistani cuisine.

    The purpose, you ask?

For Pakistanis, this list just may remind you of some timeless favorites you have been missing out. After all, with dozens of fancy restaurants opening up every week, who can blame you for forgetting a few childhood favorites.

For all others, it’s a perfect place to start your masalay-daar (‘spice-filled’) journey without delving deep into those hardcore lamb curries.

So unbuckle your belt and let the feasting begin.

    Chatpati Fruit Chaat

    Chatpati Fruit Chaat

Let’s begin the narrative by something healthy, shall we? There’s no doubt that fruit chaat is a favorite in every household without exception. And no two fruit chaats are ever the same.

Anyone can muster up the skills to make a half-decent fruit chaat: cut up a few seasonal fruits, add some spices, and voila!

Pakistani fruit chaats are a bit distinct from what you see across the world.

Firstly, there is a very dose of chaat masala, a unique blend of spices that gives the fruit chaat a wonderful zesty flavor.

And then there is the orange juice or marinade. Adding a generous cup or two can add a bittersweet kick to your chaat.

Don’t have orange juice handy? Simply add ‘Tang’ or ‘Rooh Afza’.

Samosa – Aloo, Cottage Cheese or Nutella

I can devour about a million of these! Typically found in bakeries with a thick crispy outer shell, they are served piping hot. Alone or with a range of dipping sauces, samosas are a regular at iftar tables and family gatherings. The sizes vary, of course, but the consensus is usually in favor, no matter what size!

Interestingly, you can make samosas with cottage cheese filling, behari chicken or even a spoonful of nutella! The variety is endless.

    Aloo Pakora

One of the most popular Pakistani food cult favorites! I am yet to come across a single living soul who says they don’t love aloo pakoras. They are coated with chickpea flour and deep-fried, making them loaded with crunch.

Pakoras really have no equivalent in other world cuisines in terms of taste and texture. Spice it up by adding Trachyspermum Ammi to the batter and thank me later!

    Baingan Pakoras

A healthier variation of the aloo pakoras is the one that is made with baingan (eggplant). Of course, these aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it is an amazing way to incorporate more vegetables into the diet.

The taste of the eggplant itself is kind of subdued by the coating and the crunchiness that accompanies deep frying. Use a sweet and tangy dip sauce to make it all the more delicious.

    Dahi Phulki

Made up of yogurt and small portions of fried batter, dahi phulki served cold is an amazing way to satiate your taste buds. It tastes particularly amazing in hotter seasons when the cold yogurt helps alleviate some of the thirst and the heat.

The best thing about this dish is that the toppings can be tinkered with freely according to individual preference. I personally love some crispy papdi on top!

    Spring Rolls

I am a sucker for all things crispy and fried. Understandably, traditional spring rolls are among my absolute favorites for family get-togethers. Paired with other dishes such as fruit chaat or dahi phulki, or even by themselves, piping hot spring rolls are simply mouthwatering.

You don’t need to follow any recipe, in particular, just add in a mixture of vegetables, noodles, and chicken to your liking and get creative! Again, a delicious way of incorporating more vegetables to your comfort food.

    Chicken Bread

Not only does this taste great, but it also looks like something straight out of a bakery. The presentation is amazing too! Although Chicken Bread is served in various varieties across the world, there is absolutely nothing like one stuffed with a local blend of chicken and spices.

And let’s face it, a lot of the enjoyment of food comes from the way it looks, doesn’t it? It is also a very versatile recipe, as the chicken filling can be made just the way your family loves it. To add oomph to the filling, introduce it to some coal smoke at the end. You will love it.

    Blooming Onion

A fancy name, an even fancier presentation, and exceptionally easy to make – sounds like a dream come true, doesn’t it?

Making this is easier than any other dish, and it also really adds to the decor at the table. It is increasingly becoming a staple in most middle-income Pakistani households.

Simply halve an onion and then create proportional cuts, dip it in flour batter, and deep fry!  Done and done.

    Fruit Salad with Cream

This one is a Ramadan favorite, especially if the holy month coincides with summer. The cream neutralizes the health benefits of a fruit salad, but who said Pakistani food was big on health anyways?

    Mangoes with Cream

Mango is rightly said to be the king of fruits. Raw, pulped, or in a dessert, the flavor of mangoes is just out of this world.

Cutting up mango chunks mixed with cream and served ice-cold makes the whole family salivate at its mere mention. You will forget peaches and cream in no time.

It is heavy on the calories, but the taste is absolutely worth it. Mangos aren’t as popular in the west as they are in the east, so I would surely urge you to try it with an open mind.

    Jalebi

I have an extremely strong sweet tooth. But even for those who don’t, Jalebi is something that just cannot be resisted. It truly has a force of its own, a magnetic pull so to say. Like many items on this list, Jalebi is very unhealthy and fattening.

But that shouldn’t stop you from a couple of bites every now and then. Treat it like Baklava, I would say.

    Chanaa Chat

Chanaa chat is one of my absolute favorites. Along with being super tasty, it is also healthy. Boiled chickpeas, boiled potatoes, chopped onions, tomatoes, and green chilies, topped with crispy papdi – absolute heaven!

There are also variations to how this can be prepared. While some people prefer it with yogurt, others like it with imli chutney instead. But, one thing is for sure, you will be hard-pressed to find a household in Pakistan or India where this isn’t made.

One tip for easy and quick cooking is boiling a sufficient quantity beforehand and freezing it. This affords great convenience as all that needs to be done to prepare is thawing the frozen chickpeas!

    Kachori

Fried puff pastry with scrumptious filling; what more could you want? In all truth, however, this is a common food item throughout the world that has been adapted through the addition of spices and a moong daal mixture. Usually eaten with a variety of dip sauces, it is truly irresistible. One of the popular street foods, it has now become a dish which is consumed by almost every household, especially in Karachi.

And for those who are conscious of hygiene with regards to street vendors (if you happen to be in Pakistan) or Pakistani restaurants, there are plenty of recipes available online.

    Gulaab Jamun

Is there anyone here who has the will power to resist gulaab jamun? No, right?

These little dough balls soaked in sheera (sugar water with cardamoms) are like balls of heaven! Tim Horton’s Timbits and Dunkin Donut’s Mini’s do not stand a chance!

When served hot, it feels as if they just melt in the mouth.

    Red Beans Salad

Salad made with red beans also includes chopped tomatoes, onions and is topped with spring onions. Adding a squeeze of fresh lemon juice really takes the taste to another level altogether.

While soaking and boiling the red lentils does take up some time, I find it is easier to boil a whole lot together and then freeze it. That way, all you need to do is defrost the red beans whenever the craving hits.

It is healthy and delicious, which is something we can’t say for most items here.

    Imli Chutney

Technically, Imli Chutney at it’s core is a dip sauce. But it truly is in a league of its own – and therefore deserves mention separately as a distinct dish.

No Pakistani wedding or family dinner can be complete without Imli (tamarind) ki chutney. The sweet and sour taste compliments just about anything. In fact, it is almost criminal to eat pakoras without imli chutney. Add it to any dish such as Dahi phulki or even channa chaat, this baby just enhances the taste of the entire meal. I’m a big fan!

    Limo Paani (Lemonade)

Not only is it super yummy, but it is also a wonderful way of ingesting salts and sugar. This allows for the normalization of electrolytes in our body.

How does the Pakistani version differ from the lemonade you find elsewhere? For one, it’s a little bitter thanks to the black pepper, salt, and sugar that goes into making it.

A perfect thirst quencher on a hot summer day.

    Rooh Afza

Speaking of thirst quenchers, meet the Monarch itself.

A refreshing and delightful drink, this iconic red concoction is a must in Ramadan. I highly doubt there is any Pakistani or Indian family that doesn’t have Rooh Afza occasionally. For those who haven’t tasted it, get ready for the most pleasant sweet rush your mouth will ever have.

    Are you ready?

I must warn you, the popular Pakistani food favorites mentioned here are quite addictive. Once you go through a few favorites from this list, you’ll be ready to graduate to the world of mouthwatering Karahis and Biryanis.

My only suggestion would be to keep a check on your serving size every time you are dealing with Pakistani and Indian food. It is generally a calorie-rich affair, so you’ll always have to keep yourself in check in case you get hooked.

Have I missed out on some popular Pakistani food favorites that deserve a mention? Let us know in the comments below.

Best Pakistani Drama Serials of 2019 – 2020

    2
    Alif poster
    Alif poster

The previously cringe-worthy industry of Pakistani drama has undergone a huge revolution. Like, seriously! Earlier, the vast majority of dramas were simply not worth watching.

Today, dramas focus on real-life situations and display content which is truly riveting! Directors are increasingly utilizing the medium of dramas, highlighting issues that truly deserve attention. For example, topics such as rape and psychological issues.

Equally exciting is the number of new faces that are making their mark on the industry in a very short time. Stars like Ayeza Khan, Iqra Aziz and Yumna Zaidi are taking the drama industry by storm with their scintillating performances.

Nonetheless, this isn’t always the case. There are still plenty of dramas that are still revolving around the typical saas-bahu feuds. The list I’ve compiled so far mainly focuses on issues other than this! While you are at it, you may also want to check out our list of best dramas from 2019 or from the year prior.

If you have the time to binge watch Pakistani dramas, these are the ones you should consider!

    Yeh Dil Mera

    Yeh Dil Mera poster

The Pakistani drama ‘Yeh Dil Mera’ stars a spectacular cast which is enough to draw in a massive audience. The likes of Adnan Siddiqui, Ahad Raza Mir and Sajal Ali play the lead roles in this uber successful drama.

The main storyline revolves around the chemistry between opposites, bringing to life the cliché of opposites attract! Furthermore, Farhat Ishtiaq has written a truly mesmerizing script. Aehsun Talish’s direction too has received accolades by a majority of critics. The drama has all the trappings including murder, intrigue, a convoluted love story, shock, and betrayal. All in all, it is definitely a drama worth seeing.

    Kashf

Recent dramas, as I have mentioned earlier too, have begun to see the wisdom in using the power of media on shedding light on important issues. Similarly, Kashf is a wonderful attempt by the director Danish Nawaz, to shed some light on a rare sleep disorder.

The subject of the drama is dream anxiety disorder or nightmare disorder. Hira Mani has played out the leading character’s fear and anxiety perfectly.

One can almost imagine the intense struggle of the character, Kashf Binte Imtiaz Ahmed, who is plagued by nightmares as they come true in reality.

Her struggles also considerably shape her personal and social life. The drama serial helps us see the world through the lens of someone who is going through a mental disorder, an aspect which is sorely needed.

    Ruswai

In a country rampant with rape cases, and in which harassment is a routine feature, Ruswai is an extremely relatable drama. The drama portrays the reality of what rape survivors go through. The drama accurately portrays the abandonment by the closest loved ones and the unbearable anguish it causes.

Furthermore, the drama explores an extremely important social issue: the treatment of a rape survivor by the spouse and the lack of awareness about therapy. Moreover, a woman not hiding her rape case, rather fighting for justice simply takes the cake.

Additionally, the acting is truly commendable. The actors go skin deep into the characters, making it a believable affair from the start.

I must warn, however, that the drama serial does begin to drag near the end.

    Ghalati

Anger is a truly vengeful thing with a mind of its own. However, there is a need to control it. It is particularly important to ensure, that in moments of anger, we refrain from actions that will cause serious consequences. Ghalati is a drama that shows us exactly this.

Nevertheless, while it brings forward this learning aspect, it is also, for the most part, a typical drama in terms of arguments between the saas and the bahu, which can get a little tedious. I mean, we have enough of those already, don’t we?

I shouldn’t really write this, but I hate how the husband (Affan Waheed) casually gives ‘TALAAQ’ to his wife. Moreover, how he pushed his sister in the recent most episode really put me off.

    Meray Paas Tum Ho

Tales of men who are unfaithful are many. On the other hand, tales of women who are unfaithful, are few and far in between. In comes, the drama serial which has topped all charts. Aside from the star-studded cast, the drama truly has a lot to offer.

The best part I feel is the fact that it tells the other side of the story, the one in which the husband is sweet, faithful, and loving, but the wife still strays. The twist where the husband also hits the financial jackpot was a bit much, to be honest. Also, the last scene was a super stretch. However, overall, it is a good watch!

    Alif

Critics have long hailed Umera Arshad as one of the best novel writers in Pakistan. Likewise, the drama Alif – based on her novel, did not disappoint even her diehard fans.

The storyline is fraught with emotions that viewers are sure to feel. The much talked about drama draws upon spiritual elements most Pakistanis can surely relate to. Therefore, it drew up a considerable fan base immediately upon it’s release.

Hamza Ali Abbasi’s return to the screen after a brief hiatus also contributed to the drama becoming wildly popular.

However, it is definitely not lighthearted. In order to truly grasp both the storyline and its philosophical elements, the drama demands attention and concentration from the viewers.

    Ranjha Ranjha Kardi

Everyone faces hardships in life one way or another. At some point in our lives, we are forced to live a life that we could not have anticipated in our worst nightmares.

Such is the fate of Noori in the drama, who is forced to marry a mentally challenged man, ‘Bhoola’. The character, and the storyline as a whole, became overnight sensations in much of Pakistan.

The acting too is commendable. Imran Ashraf clearly shines in his portrayal of Bhoola, taking the screen by storm during every scene. This drama played a major part in a breakout year that marked him as one of the industry’s most promising actors.

    Ehd-e-Wafa

Ehd-e-Wafa is another drama that has made a place for itself in the hearts of many. Granted, there was a bit of apprehension as it was an ISPR funded production. There were apprehensions that the drama has been produced with the sole agenda of molding public opinions.

However, this all faded away when the true story unveiled.

And even though it is patriotic and military-inspired, what is the harm in that? Our armed forces are our pride, and there is no wrong in being patriotic.

The story progresses by following four key characters, portrayed as college friends. These are Osman Khalid Butt, Ahad Raza Mir, Ahmad Ali, and Wahaj Ali. Each character goes on to live separate lives, intermingled through carefully crafted plot narratives and conflicts.

Although it may sound similar to Alpha Bravo Charlie, the drama eventually takes on an identity of it’s own.

    Khaas

Our society is truly patriarchal. Males in our society are often condescending, demanding, demeaning and unappreciative. Yes, I know not all men! The drama serial Khaas, is a wonderful attempt to show how such characters hurt their significant others.

It is also an accurate portrayal of the shift in the women, who no longer stand to put up with this behavior. One of the best things that this drama showed was the support of the girls’ parents for her actions.

While in real life girls are often forced to live a humiliating existence merely for the sake of social standing and customs, Khaas showed that this doesn’t have to be the case.

Simply because society expects adherence to age-old customs, does not mean they are right, or that they are the only way to go. It tells the women, it is right to stand up, because they deserve more!

Moreover, women in Islam have the right to ‘Khula’.  For all the mothers out there with sons; make them watch this!

    Ishq Zah-e-Naseeb

All over the country, fans are positively swooning over the spectacular production that is Ishq Zah-e-Naseeb. The storyline is truly unique. Along with this, the cast has rendered captivating performances that have kept the audience riveted.

It is also one of the dramas which have tried to break the silence on topics that are often shushed.

Unsurprisingly, psychological illnesses are for the most part not taken seriously in Pakistan.

Going to the psychologist is still considered laugh-worthy. The drama serial Ishq Zah-e-Naseeb is, therefore, a breath of fresh air.

Zahid Ahmed has played the role of Sameer, a character with a split personality disorder, with perfection. His passion and interest in the character are evident from the way he has acted it out.

Overall, the drama is surely one you should not miss out on.. After all, It is the most searched Pakistani drama on Google for a reason.

It is truly amazing that these dramas are being used to shed light on topics that truly matter. Rather than run-of-the mill gibberish in the form of this affair and that girlfriend – these are dramas that hold our attention, provide entertainment and help us learn valuable lessons as well.

There is no dearth of dramas that are typical and focus on the storyline boy meets girl, or those annoying saas-bahu feuds.

The need of the hour is to spread awareness about topics and issues that matter.

We hope you enjoyed reading our list of top Pakistani dramas, are there any that we missed out on? Let us know what your favorite Pakistani drama 2020 and 2021 is by commenting below.

Let’s face it, we don’t always have the time to wait for pizza delivery (or the cash). This one’s a winner, even a favorite with the kids! All you have to do is cut off the crusts of the toast. Smear it generously with the sauce. Then add the vegetables and chicken tikka chunks. Top it off with grated cheese – the more the merrier and sprinkle oregano on it. Pop it in the oven for a bit and there you have it!

I love making these for my family as a tea-time snack!

    5.  Mug Cake

    Ingredients:

    • ¼ cup all-purpose flour,
    • Unsweetened cocoa powder: 2 tablespoons,
    • ¼ cup white sugar,
    • Pinch of salt,
    • Pinch of baking soda,
    • Milk: 3 tablespoons,
    • Canola oil: 2 tablespoons,
    • Water: 1 tablespoon,
    • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract.

    Instructions:

Take a large mug which is microwave safe. First, simply add all the dry ingredients and mix them. Then, stir in milk, canola oil, water and vanilla extract. Next, put it in the microwave for about 1 minute and 45 seconds. The cake should be cooked through. This will depend on your personal microwave power settings so make sure to cook for longer or lesser time, as needed. This makes a perfect sweet treat for any time of the day!

    6.  Egg Sandwich

Egg Sandwich Recipe: How to Make Egg Sandwich

    Ingredients:

    • Boiled egg,
    • Mayonnaise,
    • Vinegar,
    • Chopped green chilies,
    • Chopped cucumber,
    • Lettuce leaves,
    • Bread,
    • Salt, pepper and white pepper,
    • Boiled and shredded chicken,
    • Slice of cheese.

    Instructions:

To begin with, mash the boiled eggs with a fork. Once this is done, add all the ingredients except for the lettuce leaves and bread. All the spices are of course as per your individual preferences. Once the mixture is ready, the next step is the assembly. Heat up the bread, and if you like your cheese melted, put the cheese on top to melt it! Put lettuce leaves on the bread, and then the mixture.

Top it off with the second slice of bread. Not only is this particular recipe extremely tasty, but it is also healthy. It is also an easy way in which vegetables can be incorporated into the diet of kids who are picky eaters.

    7.  Strawberry-Banana Shake

Healthy Strawberry Banana Milkshake - Chocolate With Grace

    Ingredients:

    • Strawberries,
    • Bananas,
    • Milk,
    • Sweetener of choice.

    Instructions:

In order to make your shake thicker and hence even yummier, one amazing trick is to slice up the strawberries and bananas, and freeze them. For those who are in a hurry, especially mums, it always help to have frozen zip lock bags of cut up fruits in the freezer. When needed, pop the contents of a bag into the blender. Add milk and sweetener of your choice to it. Then, blend it! It’s perfect for those hot summer days when you are simply too lazy to make an effort for your meal. And on top of that, its extremely healthy and nutritious as well!

While I have mentioned two specific fruits, there is really no end to the variations of fruits you can add to your shakes. It is really all up to you! This is also a filling drink for kids, especially those who shy away from drinking milk.

    8.  Potato Skins

    • Potatoes,
    • White sauce,
    • Cheese,
    • Olives,
    • Oregano.

    Instructions:

The first step to making potato skins is to halve the potatoes. No need to take the skin off! Add a bit of olive oil on top and put them in the oven for a little while. This will help to cook the potatoes a bit. After a little while, take out the potatoes and scoop out some of the pulp. Mix white sauce, mashed potato pulp any spices needed. Scoop this mixture back into the hollowed-out potatoes with skins, top off with cheese, olives, and oregano. Then, put them back in the oven for a while. Ingredients:

    • Peanut butter,
    • Jam jelly as per preference,
    • Bread.

    Instructions:

Don’t be fooled by the limited ingredients, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are super delicious and also very filling. The best part is how simple it is! Simply spread peanut butter on one slice, and jam jelly on the other. Combine – enjoy! If you are looking to make it healthier, opt for brown bread instead of white. There are also sugar free or diet versions of jam jellies available which can be used as well.

    • Lime juice,
    • Spices such as salt and pepper.

    Instructions:

These are the key ingredients needed. However, there is no right or wrong method when it comes to this particular recipe. Gather together all the fruits you can, and all the fruits you love! Cut them all into cubes and add them in a bowl. Next, pour in some lime juice and a pinch of salt and pepper.

An alternative to this would be the addition of an abundance of cream. It is, of course, less healthier, but oh so delicious! When trying the variant with the cream, or even the one mentioned earlier, it is important that the salad be super cold when serving. It is refreshing and a wonderful way to consume a variety of fruits and hence nutrients. It is also one of the ways in which picky children can be encouraged to consume fruits. The bright colors will entice them to try it!

Beat Boredom while being isolated at home with these cool tips

    0

2020 was touted to be the year for everyone. Needless to say, it started with a Bang.

Unfortunately, almost four months in, the whole world is reeling from its after-effects. Moreover, presently, more than half of the global population is under a strict lock-down and quarantined at home.

While it might have seemed like a vacation, in the beginning, it is only but natural to succumb to boredom once the novelty wears off. However, it doesn’t have to be like this. Are you sick of the situation too? Don’t worry, we have you covered.

Here we share a few ways you can beat boredom while self-isolating at home. Yes. Even if you have kids!

    Set Up A Cool Routine

Firstly, instead of walking around in boredom in your house, do yourself a favor and set up a routine for yourself and your family. Engaging yourself in a daily routine will not only make long days at home meaningful but will also give you something to look forward to.

In fact, it has been revealed through studies that loss of daily routine can lead to boredom and depression. Therefore, settling down in a daily routine or creating a new one will generate a sense of coherence. So ‘chop-chop’!

Get up and get ready, plan a cool day for yourself and your kids and enjoy innovative activities. Moreover, don’t sleep all day and wake up all night. Make it the other way around and get some sun.

De-Clutter and Be in Control Foreva!

Although this may seem counter-intuitive, decluttering your wardrobe and your house is one of the best ways to destress in these highly stressful times. In fact, you’ll be killing two or more birds with one stone.

Again, not only will you be getting rid of things you don’t use anymore, but you will also find stuff that may be of use for you now.

Moreover, this simple act of decluttering will actually give you a sense of control and command in these unprecedented times. Plus, you can let the kids help you and teach them so much by organizing stuff. Make it fun for them by creating a cool activity out of it (we will do kids special soon)

    Pamper Yourself like never before

You finally have time on your hands to pamper yourself as much as you want. Although times are hard right now, this does not mean that you can’t indulge in a spa day! In fact, this might just be the perfect time to do so.

    • Take out your manicuring kit, slather some good hand cream and push down those cuticles. Use a bright and preppy color on your nails.
    • Experiment with your hair color and try on a different shade.
    • Set up some candles in your bathroom, turn on your favorite tunes and take a nice, long relaxing bath.
    • Dress up as if you are going out! Nothing beats boredom better than putting on a dress and a pair of high heels.
    • Don’t forget to take a picture and upload it on Instagram.

Voila! Who said self-isolation is boring.

Catch Up on Your Missed Reading

If you are not big on reading, leave this tip out!

In sum, these are trying times and it is hard to stay away from what is going on around us and hence, reading a book is one of the best ways to disconnect. In fact, this is the ideal time to catch up on your missed reading.

In addition, since most of the books are available to read online, reading a book is literally just a click away.

However, if you like to have a hard copy in your hands, you can simply order books from your local bookstore. Spice it up by experimenting and picking up a book that you wouldn’t read under normal circumstances. No one.. literally no one will disturb you now! Finish your book in peace.

    Bring it On, Master chef!

Instead of moping around the house and getting bored, why don’t you pick up a knife and chopping board and get going? Trust me, this is the best time to brush up on your culinary skills! Moreover, if you are not alone in the house, you will be able to get some feedback on the food you cook.

In the meantime, since most of the grocery stores are open and are delivering groceries right to your doorstep (in a few countries only), all you need to do is find a recipe and get going!

Furthermore, if you are not that confident, you can even enroll in online cooking and baking lessons to perfect this art!

    Challenge Yourself!

‘A bored mind is a devil’s workshop’. This quote aptly portrays the current scenario of people who are isolating at home. That said, there is a lot that you can do to stave off boredom. Challenge yourself and learn a new language. In fact, learning a new language has never been easier.

With apps such as Babbel, Rosetta and DuoLingo, you have the option to select from a number of available languages. Furthermore, these apps have audio-visual cues and quizzes along with lessons to turn you into an expert in no time!

    Move that A**!

While you are isolating at home, you don’t necessarily have to turn into a couch potato! In fact, it is recommended that you move around as much as possible. After all, exercise releases endorphins and endorphins make you happy. While keeping the rules of ‘social distancing’ in mind, you can go out for a jog or a walk every day.

Nevertheless, if you are not an out-door person, you can roll out your mat and pick up some weights to get in a good workout. Then again, the point is to move and burn a few calories. Simply dance away to your favorite tunes and be happy.

Interestingly enough, a lot of famous trainers and exercise gurus are conducting free workout classes online to ensure that everyone stays active, both physically and mentally!

Connect with Your Family and Friends

Needless to say, stressful times call out for a family hug! Unfortunately, social distancing rules out any real hugs. However, this does not mean that you can’t connect with them and have a virtual group hug.

From ‘Zoom’ to ‘Google hangout’ to our good old Skype and WhatsApp, it is now possible to stay connected with your loved ones 24/7.

In fact, this is a very good time to reconnect with your old friends and even relatives that you have been meaning to call!

    Detox Mentally

While this may sound a little too good to be true, it is important to detox yourself mentally. It is so easy to get terrified by what is happening around us and get affected by it mentally. Nonetheless, in order to maintain your sanity and keep yourself calm, try noting down five things that you are grateful for every day before going to bed.

It can be something as small as having a good cup of coffee in the morning or baking a delicious brownie. Nonetheless, the point is that you go to bed with something to be grateful for!

These are hard times, but we are all in it together and we’ll get through it!

Why Shawerma Plus just might serve the best shawarma in North America?

    0

One look at Shawerma Plus (based in Waterloo, Ontario) and you can tell this is not your average shawarma place. For one, they spell it shawerma (with an ‘e’) rather than shawarma. But the unique attributes of this growing restaurant chain go well beyond the spelling.

In the last twenty years or so, shawarma has caught up with Pizza and American fast food staples such as burgers and fries in the quest to be labelled as the world’s most popular food. It comes in a number of variants, including Donner kebabs, pita rolls and wraps among others – but the end product is pretty much the same: a bunch of ingredients rolled up in a flatbread alongsidean array of sauces.

But despite all the creative offsprings that we now see all across major North American metropolitans like New York and San Francisco, the traditional shawarma remains very much a middle eastern affair.

    Keeping It Simple

So how does one differentiate between a good shawerma and normal one? If you ask Jawad Ghabra, the owner of Shawarma Plus, it is very much a combination of years of learning mixed in with the right philosophy: fresh ingredients, top-grade halal chicken, and no shortcuts.

This is where so many shawarma places get it wrong. In order to create their own version of the Mediterranean classic, you can usually expect an experience where there is more madness than method. Not only can this backfire greatly, it also runs the risk of permanently alienating clientele that are not used to middle eastern / Mediterranean flavors.

A good shawarma, as Shawerma Plus illustrates, needs to have it’s core right: tender, flavourful meat may seem like something that expected, but you would be surprised that almost 80 percent of shawarma places get this part incorrect. Bland or dry meat has been the death knell for many a shawarma. Another important ingredient, as Jawad highlights, is that the sauces need to be authentic and ideally homemade. When you use ultra-processed off-the-shelf sauces, not only does it jeopardize the end product’s flavour, but it makes it an unauthentic experience. You do not want that.

    Getting the ‘Shawarma Mix’ right

You may have heard of the marketing mix – all of the key components of launching or positioning a product successfully in a market. But there is also a shawarma mix. If you following the key guidelines of the shawarma mix, the worst case scenario is that you will create a shawarma wrap that is fairly eatable. The best case scenario: you just might create a masterpiece. Here are the essentials where we feel Shawerma Plus has managed to outdo so many of it’s vaunted competitors (we are looking at you Halal Guys).

    • Oil: Don’t over do it. A big greasy shawarma might seem heavenly comfort food for the first few bites, but by the time you are done, you will never want to look at it again.
    • Flavor: Dont shy away from flavor. Be open options for all types of taste buds and spice levels.
    • The veggies: They must be fresh, and ideally, locally sourced. And by the way, did we mention they have to be fresh?
    • Sauce: Ideally homemade, not shy of providing an extra tinge of flavor.
    • The Meat: Needs to be succulent, tender, soft without being chewy. Ideally halal, because if you didn’t know – halal meat just tastes better. No compromise in sourcing.
    • The Presentation: A great shawarma without good presentation is no shawarma at all. Make the presentation neat – and try to serve up some fries wherever you can.

Ranked as the best shawerma in the region by over 24 sources including Google and TripAdvisor, Shawerma Plus is well on it’s way to becoming a big player in a growing market. It is also a testament to the theory that family-owned businesses tend to offer the best food experiences at the best prices.

As for shawarma lovers like us, we are ready to see brands like Shawerma Plus take shawarma to the next step of becoming the global food.

Stunning royal wedding gowns that will make you want to get married (again)

    0

A wedding is an extremely joyous occasion. Indeed, there is something about witnessing a wedding that fills one’s heart with love. Royal weddings are no different. In fact, they bring with them an ‘oomph’ factor that can’t be overlooked.

Significantly, it is the wedding gowns that literally take our breath away. Let’s go down memory lane and take a look at some of the most glamorous and remarkable wedding gowns till date.

    Queen Elizabeth 2, 1947

We all know how Queen Elizabeth came into reign after the tragic demise of her father. However, she was always the next in line to the throne and knew how to win the hearts of the people.

Interestingly enough, when she walked down the aisle in 1947, her wedding gown was more than a fashion statement.

Apparently, in contrast to opulent wedding gowns of that era, her ivory silk wedding gown was embroidered with garlands of spring flowers and seed pearls. Depicting hope and renewal in the post-war Britain.

    Grace Kelly, 1956

Apparently, Grace Kelly is credited for setting the trend for elegant and modern wedding dresses of the present times. Her beautiful wedding dress was a gift from MGM studios and had a lace bodice with a pleated silk skirt which required 100 yards of silk net!

Moreover, the antique Brussels lace on the bodice had hundreds of seed pearls to hide the underlying seams. Instead of a tiara, Grace Kelly opted for a pearls and lace headpiece to hold her veil in place… And the trail was made of lace too!

    Queen Noor of Jordan, 1978

Queen Noor of Jordan’s wedding dress was an epitome of minimalism and elegance to say the least. Instead of going for a traditional wedding gown, the house of Christian Dior was commissioned to create the ethereal silk-crepe tiered skirt and a sheer veil.

Needless to say, she glowed on her wedding day! However, if you ask me, a royal dress should be ‘Royal’!!!!

    Princess Diana, 1981

Obviously, if we are rounding up the best royal wedding gowns, the list can’t be complete without mentioning Lady Di’s exceptional wedding gown. This masterpiece turned the ‘princess wedding gown’ of fairy tales into a reality for every teenage girl.

Also, interestingly, instead of opting for the Royal dress-maker, like her predecessors, Lady Di went with little-known designers, David and Elizabeth Emanuel.

The gorgeous ivory taffeta gown had intricate embroidery of sequins and 10,000 pearls. Moreover, the fabric used in the gown was specially commissioned from a British farm.

In addition to all this, the dress had a 27-foot trail! Can you ever think about walking in such a heavy dress?

    Duchess of Cambridge, 2011

In contrast to her late mother-in-law, the Duchess of Cambridge decided to walk the aisle in a traditional wedding gown. However, the traditional wedding gown had its share of modern touches as it was done by Sarah Burton who heads Alexander McQueen.

The gown had a long train, classical silhouette and was decorated with intricate floral lace appliqués all over.  To summarize, the dress was amazing as it included patterns of rose, thistle, shamrock and daffodil. In addition, the way she carried herself was mere perfection. Don’t you agree?

    Charlene, Duchess of Monaco, 2011

In contrast to her British counterpart, the Duchess of Monaco chose something different. Apparently, she tailored her wedding gown from Giorgio Armani.

The exquisite wedding gown had silk organza and satin with around 40,000 Swarovski crystals and 20,000 mother-of-pearl teardrops sewn in it. Phew! Just imagine the amount of glamour she spread as she walked!

In addition, the dress looked perfect, not only because of her sleek figure but also because it was totally stunning.
Moreover, the bride’s bouquet was sketched by Armani himself! Cool, isn’t it.

    Duchess of Sussex, 2018

Interestingly, the Duchess of Sussex also decided to break away from tradition on her wedding day. Instead of a typical lace and silk wedding gown, she opted for an off-the-shoulder dress with ¾ sleeves. Making a lovely fashion statement.

Equally important, the 16-foot veil was the show-stopper as it had an intricate hand-embroidered floral pattern on it. This gown was designed by the house of Givenchy.

Try these branding ideas and take your new business one step forward

    1
brand chart with keywords and elements on blackboard

It isn’t news at all that competition in the market is tough! The question then arises – what can you do to make it in the industry? To this end, branding has been found to be one of the most effective ways of firmly establishing your business.

Moreover, it helps give a unique face to your company and helps establish solid brand loyalty.

Don’t know where to get started? For this purpose, here are a few effective strategies to help your business move forward in the right direction:

    Choose an Archetype

But first – what is an archetype? An archetype is an idea of basing the logo of your business on characters that are recognizable. For example, the logo of KFC’s Colonel Sanders is recognized the world over!

Nonetheless, while it may not exactly be drawn from folklore or a fable, it does bring to mind the tireless struggles of a man who made it big – and that story definitely has a nice ring to it!

    Pick a Smashing Logo!

Your logo is literally the face of your organization. Above all else, this is what your preferred consumer base will remember and relate to your products. It follows logically that the logo should be designed to be memorable and unforgettable.

In fact, if you are successful in leaving a lasting effect, your logo may very well symbolize the entire industry. To demonstrate this, consider the logo of McDonald’s which has become synonymous with the whole fast food industry.

Critically evaluate your Social Media Strategy

Social media, nowadays, is THE way to get your message across. Earlier, advertisements in newspapers, radios, and TVs were the mode of communication. However, times have changed and the paradigm has noticeably shifted towards campaigns being run dominantly on social media platforms.

These include Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, etc. Hence, these are the areas that definitely need meticulous planning and immense attention to detail to ensure what’s being advertised is as close to perfect as possible!

Ensuring a robust presence and engagement with potential customer base on these platforms is essential! In fact, it is here that your brand can achieve the most visibility. Apart from this, it can also be a cost-effective method of boosting your campaign. Win-win indeed!

    Packaging makes a significant difference

After the official logo, when a customer or a potential customer looks at your product, what’s the first thing that they notice? That’s right – it’s the packaging!

Consequently, it is imperative that the packaging is designed to really capture and hold the attention of the viewers. There are leaps and bounds of advancements in the field of graphical design. Clearly, they need to be harnessed and put to good use.

Equally important is the fact that the packaging must go with the theme of your product. Further, this will help reinforce the message your brand is looking to put across. Besides, it is always good to produce something that is not only functional and effective but also aesthetically pleasing.

Prior to launching your brand, all these factors need to be considered in great depth. Certainly, a well thought out strategy will help you on your path to success.

Proof that music should be a part of every school’s curriculum

    0

Music has always been an integral part of our lives. Besides providing a unique way of expressing emotions, it is also known to play an important role in the intellectual development of individuals.

Fortunately, a lot of schools are now offering music as part of their curriculum. Though, a lot of people don’t necessarily agree with its authenticity.

Hence, here’s to explaining the imperativeness of music. Especially academically!

Get Brainy with Some Musical Notes!

Again, it is a no-brainer that we all want our children to be successful in life. Indeed, studies have shown that children who are exposed to music, particularly playing an instrument early in life have better neural processing and higher IQs.

That said, playing some background music while the child is engaged in another activity will not suffice. In fact, it has been shown that playing a musical instrument significantly improves speech and comprehension in children.

Consequently, why not kill two birds with one stone? Let your child enjoy music and get brainy at the same time!

    Get Socially Connected

Clearly, technological advancements have made our lives easier. However, it has also disconnected us from one another. We rely on text messages and calls to communicate instead of personally seeing each other.

Enrolling your child in music classes is one of the best ways to help him/her develop everlasting friendships with his peers. Interestingly, music classes cater to children of different age groups at the same time which allows them to explore friendships beyond a similar age bracket.

In short, children are naturally social and in today’s fast-paced world. Nonetheless, this is a unique way to engage your children in a social and creative activity.

Discipline your young ones without letting them know

Needless to say, disciplining children is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Equally important, there is no easy way about it!

However, learning to play a musical instrument instills discipline and time management in children and that too, in a fun way.

The earlier this habit develops in a child, the better it will be as he/she grows up.

Music is more than it meets the eye!

Interestingly, we may not consider music classes as a serious academic pursuit, but we are far from the truth.

Surprisingly, a single music lesson encompasses more than the subject itself. Indeed, in a beautiful and melodic way, a single music lesson integrates all the basic subjects such as mathematics, science, reading and even history.

It relaxes and calms down your child

We all know how taxing and frustrating daily life can be. In contrast to adults, children let out their stress in a different way. For example, they may misbehave or may get cranky. Hence, music lessons tend to calm down children and help them unwind at their own pace.
